What a perpetual birthday calendar is

A perpetual calendar lists the dates of the month (1 to 31) without weekdays or a year, so it can be used year after year. You write each person’s name under their birthday once, hang the calendar somewhere visible, and it keeps working indefinitely. Birthday calendars are a family tradition in many homes — often hung in a bathroom or kitchen where everyone sees them daily — and a practical tool in offices, classrooms and clubs.

How to set up your birthday calendar

1. Gather birthdays from family, friends and colleagues — check old calendars, contact apps and social profiles, or simply ask.
2. Write each name on its date, with the birth year if you want to track ages.
3. Add anniversaries and remembrance dates in a different colour.
4. Hang the calendar where you will see it every day.
5. At the start of each month, flip the page and check the coming birthdays; post cards a week early.
6. Add new people as your family and circle grow.

Using the Excel birthday tracker

The tracker calculates each person’s next birthday from today’s date, how old they will be, and how many days remain, and it highlights birthdays in the next 30 days. Sort by “days until” to see who is next. Leap-day birthdays (29 February) are shown on 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years according to your preference. Keep the file on your computer or cloud drive, or print the upcoming list each month.
